Beneficial Owner

The natural person who ultimately owns or controls a company, behind any legal intermediaries.

Definition

A Beneficial Owner is the natural person who ultimately owns or controls a company — looking through layers of holding companies, nominees, and trusts to the individual whose beneficial interest is represented. Beneficial ownership is a legal and compliance concept used across the Companies Act (Section 89, Section 90), the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and KYC regulations. An SBO is a specific subtype defined by threshold.
